6 Of The Best Home Defense Guns To Protect You And Your Family
If you’re looking for a handgun with a large capacity magazine and as a .45, then we absolutely recommend the FNX 45. With its ambidextrous controls, 15 round mags (and 10 for California…urgh), not to mention hard-hitting ammunition, it’s sure to get the job done. Even better, the addition of an MIL-STD rail allows a flashlight or rail-mounted laser for easier targeting. The FNX 45 is not cheap, however, but the back-strap options make sure you’re grip is always one of comfort. Bring in the DA/SA trigger and safety/decocker and before you know it, you have a firearm that is perfect for home defense. The 45 Colt and .410 choice of caliber to add to the .45 ACP brings this gun to the forefront of my personal list.
S&W MP SHIELD
Smith & Wesson. One of the best defensive guns on the market. Why? Many reasons, but the M&P Shield line of compact semi-auto pistols is a good place to start. It’s a consumer that makes any firearm a success or failure and the MP Shield is one gun that wins the toss every time. The thin (.95 inches at the frame), lightweight (19 ounces unloaded) polymer striker-fired gun with a very reliable trigger provides not only a durable finish and functional sights that have a low-profile design and are dovetailed into the steel receiver, it also hits home with a comfortable grip angle making the Shield easy to conceal and carry. Oh, and it also offers a substantial amount of firepower (the 9mm version comes with 7 and 8 round mags, the .40 with 6 and 7s). Put this to the fact that there are lots of accessories and holster options that come with it and you have a great gun. The MP Shield is a defensive pistol in its most basic and functional form. The Mossberg 500
The Mossberg 500. One of the greatest defensive weapons ever made. Fun Fact: Even though it started as a field shotgun, the 500 pump-action version was so popular with law enforcement, agencies across the U.S. made it their weapon of choice because it was affordable, reliable and offered plenty of stopping power. Popular for decades, the Mossberg 500 comes in many, MANY choices for us gun lovers; 6-shot versions, higher capacity models, left-handed versions, a lightweight .410 model, and…wait for it…the “Chainsaw.” That one comes with a top grip that more closely resembles the front handle of a Stihl Farm Boss than anything else. The new FLEX system allows you to swap barrels, stocks and fore-ends making your 500 able to perform a wide variety of functions. Oh, and there’s a “Just In Case (JIC)” pistol grip model that comes in its own waterproof tube. Seriously…
The Ruger SP101 revolver is on this list for a number of reasons ranging from weight, ease of use and reload and the fact that it is available in different calibers. The main reason, however, is that in terms of the point and shoot capabilities of a revolver, you really can’t argue that they are wonderful firearms. Coming in at around 25oz depending on barrel size, they can be used by even the less experienced shooter and can be easily carried around your home. When is comes to defense, I would tend to lean towards the .357 Magnum cartridge simply due to its stopping power.
With the SP101, you not only get a fantastic revolver, you also get a firearms company with a reputation that precedes itself.
In the 1980’s, Glock introduced us to the polymer-frame striker-fired semi-automatic weapon. Many saw it as the gun of the future, while “purists’ were dead set against the “plastic gun” presented to them. For the purists, it didn’t last. Today Glock pistols are the most popular sidearms for law enforcement professionals and day-to-day shooters and there is no sign of that stopping. They not only own the polymer-frame striker-fired semi-auto market, they are one of the world leaders for concealed carry. Weighing 23 ounces and measuring 1.18 inches wide, the Glock is still concealable and offers a 15+1 9mm capacity. There are a host of aftermarket parts and accessories, but the 19’s greatest draw is its robust design. The Glock is among the most reliable and simplest of all semi-autos to operate. Sure, it has its haters, but it’s STILL one of the best…ever.
What do MANY break-ins and home invasions have in common? Easy. Multiple intruders. If you have two or three or more bad guys breaking into your house or property, you’ll want more so much more than a shotgun or a handgun to protect you. What you’ll want, sorry…what you’ll NEED is a semi-automatic rifle.
Why? Simple. Shotguns have too much of a low of a capacity for these kinds of situations and a pistol means that you may be out of ammo faster than your targets. Think about it: Your intruders are armed with handguns and/or knives. What is the first weapon to come to your mind to handle multiple threats? Yes. A semi-automatic carbine, such as an AR-15 in 5.56x45mm NATO. Immediately you have greater capacity, a longer range and FAR more velocity than a handgun.
Yeah, yeah, we know that there are similar semi-auto carbines are out there just as good as the AR-15. Think AK-47s and Ruger Mini-14s to name a few, however, they are NOT the AR-15. It comes with an advantage of more common parts and accessories to build on it. It’s also cheap enough to purchase at a low end with several affordable, but quality ARs, hitting the market. Don’t let the bad press fool you. Every home should have one!
